A building‘s aesthetic depends on more than the colors, materials and original design, it requires high performing materials that help keep facades beautiful. StoColor® Dryonic®, part of Sto‘s iQ TechnologyTM family of coatings, combines supreme performance with intelligent technology – for optimum resistance to weathering and protection against algae and fungi.

When it comes to facades, aesthetic appeal is what counts. However, achieving a successful facade design is not simply about choosing the right color. Facade coatings are constantly exposed to weathering and run the risk of fading or being attacked by unpleasant microorganisms, which means they have to be able to do much more.

StoColor® Dryonic® was inspired by the fog basking beetle. It lives in the Namib desert and has adapted to the conditions that prevail there perfectly. For this beetle, constant drought is no problem, as it can turn fog into drinking water.

So what is its secret? Its shell is covered in countless microscopic bumps. Thanks to this unique surface texture, the beetle is able to turn fog into liquid fast: while the hydrophilic tips let the water condense, the hydrophobic depressions in between divert the water away. Sto has taken this observation from nature and transferred it into top performing facade paint. The paint's special surface texture helps dew and rain on the facade dry in record time, depriving algae and fungi of the nutrients they need to grow. This unique, patented, Dryonic® Technology helps provide bright and gleaming facades on virtually any substrate, year in and year out.

STO have mimicked the shell of the fog-basking beetle to create our Dryonic® Technology. Using an innovative formulation with a clever architecture of binding agent and extender, a microtexture forms on the coating‘s surface. The result is an extremely quick drying surface after rain, fog, and dew. The facade has an environmentally friendly and long-term safeguard against algae and fungal attack. Water management on facades – the scientific proof

Fraunhofer LBF in Darmstadt has tested five facade paints for their ability to drain off condensed surface water. The measurements clearly demonstrate that StoColor Dryonic® drains off the water the quickest while hardly absorbing any moisture.

The key question was how quickly condensation runs off a cool, vertical surface. With StoColor Dryonic®, the answer is two hours. All of the other paints put to the test took at least three hours.

Testing the panel weights also confirmed that the most water did indeed drain off with StoColor Dryonic®. With the silicate emulsion paint tested, the effect was actually the opposite. After five hours, the layer of paint had absorbed all of the water.
